The hazelnut tree has simple, round leaves with double-serrated edges and pointed tips. In spring, it blossoms just before the leaves emerge. The hazelnut tree is monoecious, meaning it has both male and female flowers. Male flowers are yellow catkins measuring 5-12 cm in length, while female flowers are very small, hidden within buds throughout the winter, and are red, measuring 1-3 mm in length. The fruit of the hazelnut is a type of nut, 1-2.5 cm long and 1-2 cm in diameter. The involucre surrounding the fruit partially or completely encases the shell, playing a crucial role in identifying hazelnut varieties.
Growing Conditions
Hazelnuts thrive in mild winters and prefer moist, humus-rich soils. An annual rainfall of 1000-2000 mm is necessary for healthy growth. However, temperatures below 2°C are harmful to hazelnuts, as frost can negatively impact both the quantity and quality of the yield.
Growing Regions
The best region for hazelnut cultivation in the world is the Eastern Black Sea area. Hazelnuts with high commercial value are grown as monoculture crops in the provinces of Trabzon, Giresun, and Ordu. About 80% of Turkey’s hazelnut production comes from the Black Sea region. Hazelnut farming is concentrated in Eastern Black Sea provinces like Giresun, Ordu, and Trabzon, as well as in Western Black Sea provinces such as Sakarya, Bartin, and Zonguldak.
Turkey leads global hazelnut production, accounting for 62-65% of the world’s supply. Moreover, Turkey is renowned for producing the world’s highest-quality and most flavorful hazelnuts.
